But the upgrade options table on the following website seems to indicate that one could do an in-place upgrade from XP Pro 32-bit to either version of Vista Ultimate, while one would have to do a "clean install" to get from XP Pro 64-bit to either version of Vista Ultimate.

... but most of them have wound up recommending (and presumably use themselves) W32. I have this vision of them deciding to use the slower W32 version on their quad-core, water-cooled overclocked system with 4G of RAM and SLI NVidia 8800 cards because they won't be able to play Doom2 with the 64 bit version...

I challenge you to tell me any OEM that offers any of their customers a 64 bit upgrade from Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Gateway doesn't. In another forum, someone else was saying Dell wasn't either. If 2 of the major OEMs doesn't offer, then I highly doubt any of the OEMs offer this upgrade path.

For most people, if they're going to move to Vista, the 32 bit version is the way to go. Vista performance with a 2GB 32-bit PC is just fine. There will be more driver and compatibilty problems with Vista 64. I think rather than a blanket statement " If you're going to move to Vista, do it with the 64 bit version

bought a custom made computer online and i found out that they dont offer the 64 bit cd. The company i bough from told me i would have to buy the 64 bit cd seperately.
